Cocentaina is the capital of the El Comtat region with more than 10,000 inhabitants. Located at the foot of the Sierra de Mariola and looking over the river Serpis it provides marvellous views over the entire Foia de Cocentaina region.
Its monumental heritage and architecture make Cocentaina one of the most impressive historic locations in the Alicante region, with buildings going back to the middle ages. A highlight is the Palacio Condal, one of the architectural jewels of the Valencian gothic and renaissance periods. The palace began life as a fortified residence, initially built in the 13th century by the knight Roger de Llúria, admiral of the fleet of the Crown of Aragon and Sicily.
Another highlight is the castle, with views over the entire region, which is located on the top of one of the most spectacular rocks.
Cocentaina cuisine is typified by the flavours of olive oil, sausages, meats and local produce delivered and prepared by those who know it best.
