Elche is a municipality in Spain located in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community. Capital of Bajo Vinalopó, the municipality has about 238,000 inhabitants, being the second most populated city in the province of Alicante and the third in the Valencian Community.
Its Palmeral and the Misteri d Elx are declared World Heritage Sites, being symbols of identity and main tourist attractions of this city of industrial tradition. Likewise, the Centre of Traditional Culture Puçol School Museum is included in the Register of Good Practices for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, completing the third UNESCO recognition.
Of the 326 Km² of territory, an important part is occupied by the Campo de Elche, Camp D Elx, which has territory of Antigua albufera with natural parks, a unique palm grove where regadiu systems of Roman and Arabic times and a unique culture and gastronomy.
The most famous products of Ilicitan gastronomic shopping are related to that ilicitan countryside, as they are, undoubtedly, the fresh date of its palm grove, whose cultivation is linked to the families of the Palmereros( Palm tree trimmers) themselves, who care for their cultivation and care for generations; and of course, the Mollar pomegranate, which has a differentiated quality recognised by the European Union through the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The Granada Mollar is an indigenous variety that offers great health properties, and that make it the queen of all pomegranates: in the world there are more than 500 varieties of pomegranates but it is the only one in the world with protected designation of origin.
