The municipality of Aigües, due to its privileged position facing the Mediterranean and next to the Sierra del Cabeçó d'Or, and its geographical location less than 30 kilometres from the capital of Alicante, has had a great tourist vocation, which goes back several centuries, being visited by numerous national and foreign visitors, attracted by its high landscape and environmental value and at the same time for having managed to maintain its rural and artisan character.
In order to get to know all its natural and traditional values, we propose a guided route through its emblematic Pinada, to get to know the main landscape and architectural landmarks, a subsequent gastronomic experience with flavours of the land, to conclude with a practical workshop on esparto grass handicrafts.
• Level of difficulty: low difficulty, with limited accessibility for people with reduced mobility in some parts of the route.
• Duration: 3 hours
• Services included: Explanatory guide, lunch and esparto grass craft workshop.
• Languages: Spanish/English
Meeting point: Plaza de la Iglesia, located in the centre of the village of Aigües (it is recommended to park in the esplanade next to the Cultural Centre and access the square through the passageway of the Town Hall, which is right next to the park).
From the square we will go to the famous Pinada of the municipality, where we will follow a nature trail lasting approximately 1 hour, during which we will visit its most emblematic historical and scenic places, highlighting the Gran Balneario, which dates from the 19th century, The old canals that carried the water that gushed from the numerous springs that once existed, the long paths full of stone benches full of history, dotted with aromatic plants and esparto grass. We will also walk along the different viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Alicante, together with the old buildings that still remain and that remind us of the grandeur of another era.
*Departure from the Plaza de la Iglesia, to take Calle Mayor (Mayor Street), then Calle Bonavista (Bonavista Street), to pass behind the Preventorio building, from there along the path behind the Spa to the hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen, and then to the viewpoint that is located below to return along Carrer Els Abanys (Els Abanys Street) on the way back to the Plaza de la Iglesia. (church square) *
At the end of the route and on our return to the Plaza, we will regain our strength by enjoying a gastronomic experience at the Bar-Restaurant La Bacorera, with the renowned Alicante chef Manolo Morant at the helm of the cookers, who will delight us with a lunch of local products.
*The tasting will consist of a varied salad with garden produce, followed by grilled meats and/or sausages, and accompanied by local wines. Special menus for allergy sufferers, but not for vegans. Special menu for children*.
Afterwards, we will go to the Cultural Centre where we will take part in a practical workshop on making esparto grass, a plant native to the area, led by our craftswoman Teresa Miñana, a national benchmark in this field.
Finally, visitors will be given a tasting tray as a souvenir of the different sausages made in the traditional way by José Iborra in his butcher's shop, located in the village square and with more than 80 years of tradition.
