La Serrella, now known as the Pirineo Alicantino, is one of the highest mountain ranges in the Alicante region. The sumit of the Pla de la Casa, at 1370 metres above sea level, is the fourth highest mountain in Alicante, after Aitana, Puig Campana and Mariola.
As a result, the landscape and the vistas are spectacular. From there we can see the whole valley of Guadalest with its reservoir, the Sierra de Aitana and the mountains of Puig Campana, Mondúver, Benicadell and Montgó... Your eyes will alight at the sight of such majesty, along with that common sensation of our small role within the wonders of nature. A memorable experience.
We will end the route with a well-earned break for refreshment at the Ca Canyares de Quatretondeta restaurant, one of the oldest and the best in the Vall de Seta, where they still know how to cook traditional local tapas together with their excellent rice dishes.
We will start out from the Lavador de Fageca where we will begin the ascent between the almond and olive orchards. Once we reach the path that will take us to the sumit of Pla de la Casa we will discover the various aromatic and culinary herbs that grow in the Sierra and learn about their uses. It is common to see chamois, goats, eagles, hawks and other local wildlife along the way.
We will carry on up the steeper slopes until we reach the Pla de la Casa where will discover the old cava or cold cellar. This vast refrigerator is one of the largest in the region, and we will more about how they employed these constructions for centuries to store snow and ice for commercial use.
A little further and we will arrive at the summit from where we can enjoy the spectacular views of the landscape of the Sierra de Serrella.
We will pass by the Font Roja where we take the opportunity for a short break as we leave the path to visit the so-called Peña de África, a curious cavity in the rocks in the shape of the African continent.
We will end the day at the Ca Canyares de Quatretondeta restaurant where we will taste some of the typical local dishes paired with the famed regional olive oil.
