If the Palacio Condal is impressive enough from the outside, the interior is truly splendid. The soldier and admiral Roger de Llúria originally built this 13th century palace over an earlier 12th century Moorish building. Inside we will see the Sala Dorada, with its renaissance ornamental ceiling and murals featuring the ancestors of the later Corella family. Without doubt, it is one of the artistic jewels of the Alicante region. We can also enjoy the elegant Sala de Chimenea (Chimney Hall) and the Sala de los Embajadores (Ambassadors Hall).
Joining on to the Palacio Condal, the baroque style Monasterio de las Clarisas, built in 1670 and housing canvases by the painter Paolo de Matteis, is another gem.
Afterwards we will visit the Ethnology Museum where we will discover the traditional ways of making wine, oil and flour, all essential ingredients for the popular cuisine of Cocentaina.
We will start the route from the Real Blanc Social Centre, where we will have breakfast followed by a brief explanation of the intinerary and an educational video on the history of Cocentaina.
A guide will then lead us through the various halls of the Palacio Condal explaining the secrets of each room with some interesting background and anecdotes surrounding the palace, before we go next door to the Monasterio de las Clarisas, devoted to the Miraculous Mother of God, the patron saint of Cocentaina.
We will stroll through the old town streets of Cocentaina, packed with small shops, many of which go back for generations and still preserve their historic facades, untilwe reach the the Ethnology Museum where will discover how they used to produce the wine, olive oil and flour.
We will end the route with a meal at the Restaurante L'Hostalet, where we will sample some typical Cocentaina cuisine.
