In the hidden Valle del Rincón de La Canyada we can sense the history of the centuries-old olive groves cultivated by the Muntanya family employing the knowledge and experience of generations dedicated to caring for those same trees and making fine oil with local varieties.
In the same way they care for the olives, they also preserve the stories and history written by this valley over the centuries. Stories of crimes, dark secrets and treasures such as that which occurred near the Caseta del Forner in the ravine which carries the same name. It was the site of the fabulous Treasure of Villena. This Bronze Age discovery (objects dating from around 1500 BC) is the most significant collection of its kind in Spain and the second most prized in Europe. It consists of 59 pieces of gold, silver, iron and amber with a total weight of almost 10 Kg, and was uncovered in the town of Villena. We will relate another tale related to the treasure, involving mysterious murders and intrigue, where the ancestors of the Muntanya family were directly involved in the events.
We will also learn how they made wine at home in La Canyada in the 19th century and how some of their ancestors’ utensils are still used to crush the grapes and make natural broths.
We will start by visiting some of the oldest houses and estates in La Canyada and get to know more of their history over the years.
Passing through centuries-old olive groves, we will reach the Casa del Fornes where the history of secrets, crimes and legends surrounding the Discovery of the Treasure of Villena all began.
We will then go on to the Bodega Centenaria del Pinaret, which dates from the 19th century, and learn how they still make wine in the traditional way.
During breakfast we will enjoy an olive oil tasting, with the 5 oils currently sold by OCTOBRIS BIO, along with wines from the Celler El Pinaret, and typical Canyada meats and sausages with delicious fresh bread.
